What are liposomes?
Liposomes are spherical shaped structures that are made up of a lipid bilayer membrane around an aqueous core. Their structure encapsulates hydrophilic (water loving) ingredients in the core or lipophilic (oil loving) ingredients in the bilayer, or both.
As liposomal membranes closely resemble those of cells, coupled with their small size they are able to pass through the cells in the mouth’ s buccal membrane, circumvents the harsh conditions of the stomach and, consequently avoid liver metabolism.
Genuine Liposomes
As many liposomal supplements are nothing more than phospholipid emulsions, they are not able to deliver the true benefits of genuine liposomal formulations.
When making liposomes, the phospholipids must be hydrated in order for them to start arranging themselves into a bilayer structure. To create the flat bilayer membrane the hydrophilic heads need to face the water while the lipophilic tails face each other. The spherical shape of the liposome is then created by expending a lot of energy.
Liposomes rely on electrostatic charge between the lipid molecules to keep the membrane in place. They also rely on the subsequent electric potential (referred to as zeta potential) at the interface of the lipid bilayer and the liquid/water carrier.
As a consequence of this,
a liposome cannot exist without it being present in water – that is, no water equals no liposome!

Customisation
Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) is the method used for measuring the size distribution of tiny particles like liposomes and nanoparticles in a solution. When the particle size is reduced it creates an increased surface to volume ratio, which translates to a more stable suspension

Stability
Through Zeta potential we are able to understand the state of the particle’s surface and ensure stability. Zeta potential testing measures the electric charge of particles in a liquid, influencing their tendency to repel or attract which is crucial for the stability of colloidal systems. It also impacts how liposomes interact with nutrients, influencing factors such as circulation times, cellular uptake and overall therapeutic efficacy.
The higher the zeta potential the more stable he liposome becomes.
